On Sunday, May 18, 2014, members of the GSDM community joined the crowd of some 20,000 guests at Nickerson Field for the 141st Boston University All-University Commencement.
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick delivered the keynote address in which he lauded human intimacy and community. Patrick entreated the graduates: “Be present—and see what a difference it makes in your lives and the world.”
Patrick received an honorary Doctor of Laws. The following individuals also receiving honorary degrees: Emmy-nominated actress and writer Mayim Hoya Bialik, Doctor of Humane Letters; City Year CEO and cofounder Michael Brown, Doctor of Humane Letters; Emmy-winning actor and education advocate Bill Cosby, Doctor of Humane Letters; BU trustee Rajen Kilachand (GSM 74), Doctor of Humane Letters; and MIT molecular biologist and this year’s Baccalaureate speaker Nancy Hopkins, Doctor of Science.
President Robert A. Brown awarded The Metcalf Cup and Prize for Teaching Excellence to Stormy Attaway, a College of Engineering Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Brown presented Metcalf Awards for Teaching Excellence to Terry Everson, a College of Fine Arts Associate Professor of Music, and Alan Marscher, a College of Arts & Sciences Professor of Astronomy.
Taryana Gilbeau COM 14 gave the student address on how she used her “unique story as motivation” to succeed at BU.
