Dr. Paolo Vigolo PROS 91 travelled from Italy to speak at GSDM on July 25, 2013, on the topic of, “Evaluation of therapeutic choices in implant prosthodontics.” Director of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD)Program and the Post-graduate Operative & Esthetic Dentistry Program Dr. John Ictech-Cassis invited Vigolo as a guest speaker. Residents in AEGD, prosthodontics, and periodontology attended.
Vigolo’s presentation described the results of studies of implant protocol, including treatment planning and clinical procedures, in implant dentistry. He focused on the prosthetic aspects of implant treatment.
“In the past 30 years implant dentistry has been characterized by the development of new surgical and prosthetic protocols,” Vigolo said. “The success of an implant is not exclusively due to its osseointegration, but also to its proper use as an abutment for the final restoration and its aesthetical successful outcome.”
He discussed the choice between cemented and screw retained prosthesis, accuracy of the prosthetic components, material of the implant abutments, impression and master model techniques, diameter of the implants used, and the need to splint or not splint multiple adjacent implants.
