As the sun shone through the windows of the Hiebert Lounge, students, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff wandered past rows of large screens, learning about topics ranging from the “Color Stability of Multi-Layer Fast Fired Zirconia” to the “Association between Vitamin D Deficiency and Permanent Caries among US Population,” during Science Day 2019.
The annual event, which took place on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, on the 14th floor of the Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) Instructional Building, gives students, residents, fellows, and faculty mentors from the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) the opportunity to share their research. In total, 38 predoctoral students, postdoctoral residents, and fellows presented their respective research in the form of poster and oral presentations.
“It is a pleasure to have seen such a diverse audience at Science Day today,” Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter remarked of the day. “It proves that it is an event that transcends dentistry, bringing together students, residents, fellows, and faculty from all scientific disciplines.
The day began with poster presentations and a vendor fair. Twenty-three students presented research electronically on 12 large screens in the corner of the room. Students, residents, faculty, and staff were able to engage with the students regarding their research. Vendors from various companies, with their respective displays set-up at the entrance to the Hiebert Lounge, provided samples and hands-on experience with dental instruments, techniques, and materials. According to Associate Dean of Students Dr. Joseph Calabrese, the vendor fair is a great opportunity for students and residents to explore the newest materials, instruments, technology, and products on the market. “Collaborating with the Research office on Science Day enhances the day and makes it an even more meaningful educational experience,” Calabrese said.
Later, Dr. Michael Levin, Ph.D., of Tufts University presented the keynote address, “Endogenous Bioelectric Controls of Patterning: Toward Machine Learning Discovery of Electroceuticals for Regenerative Medicine.” Following Dr. Levin’s address, 15 students and residents gave oral presentations, sharing their research in front of an audience comprised of faculty, staff, and researchers from GSDM and BUSM.
“Research is absolutely a priority at GSDM,” Hutter said. “Events such as Science Day are paramount as we continue our efforts toward promoting and strengthening our excellent research program.”
