The faculty of the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) are invited to take part in a two-day Faculty Development Series, to be held from Tuesday, December 19 – Wednesday December 20. All Patient Treatment Centers (PTC) will be closed to allow more attendance by faculty. As Director of GSDM Faculty Development, Dr. Neil Fleisher, Director of Faculty Development has organized the series as an integral part of his plan for increasing development for the GSDM faculty.
Beginning Tuesday morning at 8:30, all GSDM faculty will assemble to hear the keynote address, “Critical Thinking Strategies for Health Professional Education,” by Dr. Gerald Nosich. Dr. Nosich is a noted authority on critical thinking and has given more than 250 workshops on all aspects of teaching critical thinking. Since the mid-1980s he has been committed to teaching critical thinking across the curriculum.
Following the morning session, the chairs of each GSDM department will have the option to run their own programs independently targeted to their respective department, or to direct their faculty to attend the School-wide afternoon session, “Critical Thinking Assessment in the Classroom and the Clinic.” The first day of the Faculty Development Series will conclude at the Dean’s Faculty/Staff Meeting in the 670 Albany Street auditorium.
Wednesday morning will also begin with an all-faculty session, running from 8:30 – 11:15 a.m., while all Patient Treatment Centers remain closed. While the PTC’s will be reopened, faculty are encouraged to attend the afternoon session, again titled, “Critical Thinking Assessment in the Classroom and the Clinic.” The afternoon session will also focus on critical thinking and is specifically designed to help course directors understand how to quantify the assessment of students as to their critical thinking within their programs.
Please RSVP to Donna Linhares MacDougall (linhares@bu.edu) and identify which programs you plan to attend.
