On October 8, 2015, more than 80 people attended a special Eid-al-Adha Dinner in the Hiebert Lounge at the Boston University School of Medicine. Attendees ranged from members of the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM), School of Medicine (BUSM) and Boston Medical Center community, along with local Boston families with ties to GSDM.

The Eid-al-Adha dinner was sponsored by GSDM’s Muslim Student Association (MSA) and the BUSM Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.

The attendees of the dinner mingled with each other, while enjoying the variety of food options provided by Tarboosh Mediterranean Restaurant and taking in the views of Boston that are provided by the Hiebert Lounge.

“The Eid Al Adha dinner was an opportunity to unite the entire Boston community, with attendees ranging from physicians, residents, dental students, medical students, and community members from the neighboring towns outside of Boston,” said MSA President Amr Aly DMD 17. “The Muslim Student Association would like to thank all of those who were in attendance for their continued support towards making the Muslim Student Association a success on the medical campus.”

Eid-al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage, an annual pilgrimage to Mecca that all Muslims are expected to take part in in their lifetime. Aly spoke during the event about the importance of patience and sacrifice and how these themes are encompassed within the holiday of Eid Al Adha.

The MSA also helped to plan Eid Dinners in June and August.

Aly says he hopes these celebrations allow Muslim members of the GSDM community to celebrate their religion, while allowing all members of the GSDM community to learn more about Muslim traditions.

The MSA is also in the process of planning its bi-annual dental screening event, which is set to take place at the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center in November.

“I am proud of the MSA for continuing to organize such wonderful events for members of the GSDM community,” said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter. “I wish Amr and the MSA continued success in their programming.”
